I am looking to stock my mbuna tank soon and am planning on getting multiple species. I would like to keep a male of 4 or so species along with 2 or more females of each. I am making sure they have different patterns and shape but this leaves me at a problem. I want to keep two types of Zebra, but I want to keep hybridization to a minimum. Is this a reasonable question? Can I reduce the problem by only getting one color Zebra? Also if I do a mixed species tank should I go to the lengths to make sure I keep a ratio of male and females or a tank of only one sex? The species I am considering are:

Pseudotropheus crabro
Metriaclima callainos
Pseudotropheus demasoni
Labidochromis caeruleus
Metriaclima estherae
Melanochromis auratus
Melanochromis chipokae
Pseudotropheus sp. "Elongatus Chewere"
Pseudotropheus socolofi "Albino"

This isn't my final list as I will be removing many and adding some if I can find suitable, I'm kind of rushed right now lol

Would any of these pose more of a problem, not only with interbreeding but living with each other in general?

Thanks

Derek

I'm setting up a 55 gallon tank that was given to me. I will have an aquaclear 110 for the main filter with something else, not sure what yet, that I have laying around. I would like to center this tank around angel fish. The only other thing I want in this tank besides angels is maybe about 6 panda cories.

How many angels should I start out with? I don't mind some aggression but I don't want to be freaking out trying to find some where to put the fish that is getting killed etc. I do have a 75 gallon communtiy tank with 1 angel, so I could concieveablly put one or two in there if I had to. I really don't know that much about angel behavior or stocking situations. Just trying to get all the tips I can ahead of time.

Thanks so much!

Hey all, My last Yellow Lab died last week :(
I have been thinking about what new setup I want to start up and I think I'm going to go with a Tanganyika setup. I really want a few Calvuses because I've always really liked how they look. I've done some research on Tanganyika fish and know that they need a hard water type with a high range pH and I know that Calvuses grow REALLY SLOWLY or from what I've heard. Their aren't any good fish stores around me and I don't have the time to drive a few hours for good fish. I was thinking about getting some fish from here: Home page (Bluegrass Aquatics)

They seem to have a good selection of good healthy fish and I live in central Florida so they would get there fast.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on some other species of Tanganyika that go good with Calvuses and if that site is good for getting fish.

Also I was wondering if calvuses and other Tanganyika like live plants. I don't know if the hard water and high range pH will have any effect on plants If I ever tried to put some in there.

My question is whether I can go about slowly adding the cichlids one or two at a time or whether it best to add them in larger groups (say 6 or so). I plan on making sure all the fish are around the same size and have been planning this for awhile; determining what types can go with each other. I want to hand pick them rather than walking into my LFS and saying "gimme 10 cichlids". Is this a good move? Will it cause more aggression as they struggle for dominance and territory?

Ok, So I got a tank from a friend a few weeks ago. It's 55g (regular dimensions) and I've had it up and running for about a week, right now I have 2 picus cats, a featherfin cat, and a fire eel who's about 1 and 1/2 to 2 feet (they came with the tank). The picus cats are about 4 inches long and the featherfined cat is about 3 inches long. I was wanting to get some Black Calvus from a breeder by my house but I am kinda skeptical because the calvuses are about 2 inches long. That size + fire eel is kinda sketchy but I have pretty much raised the fire eel along side with my friend and when he got the picus cats and featherfined cat they were small, but not that small.

He has never feed the fire eel live fish and has always hand feed it freeze dried shrimp and the fire eel has never tried to go after the other catfish in the tank ever.

Would I be risking too much by getting the calvuses with the fire eel, being they would probably fit inside his mouth quite easily but he has never shown any aggression twards smaller fish even thought he is a predator and could still go after them?

Or do you think I would be good seeing the fire eel has never been exposed to live food and seems like he would be good with them because their are other fish in the tank with him?

She's now been sitting on the bottom of the tank for approximately 3 Days Not sure if she's feeding or not as i havn't seen her take any food down but there's no signs of thinning in the stomach area ? No Obvious signs of parasites or ill health, She does attempt to swim but comes back down rather heavily onto her belly. All water cons are good with nothing excessive. Her tank mates are all good and strong (5 Tetras, 4 Guppies and her Mate). No Gravel or decor have been Moved, her Mate Hasn't been bullying her as i've been watching them closely for any signs of breeding. I'm Stumped as to what could be wrong with her, any help would be much Appreciated.
