So i think to myself oh my its been no more than 3 hours and this guys already been attacked, but i don't have any fish that would have attacked it. So after removing the skeleton, i thought, i think it molted its skin, because their wasn't the big feelers attached to this shell.. So after a near heart attack, there he is sitting on the back one of my LR's. What a close call that was! :bowl:

I am new to salt tanks. I have started a 125 gallon fish/partial reef tank and have brown algae. I know vendors will say that I need a nitrate filter but do I really? Is it worth it for what they cost? Does it cut down on water changes that much and does it help to control the algae?

I have Damsels, bicolor angel and a trigger and about 50 pounds of rock which about 15 of that is live rock. How can I get rid of the algae? ph 8.2, no ammonia, gravity is 1.23. Also, how long until I see some growth on live rock? Thanks!!!!

I'm frustrated with my current 125 gallon tank mainly b/c I'm having to deal with salt spray (salt condensation on the rim of the tank), etching of the glass, and issues with moisture at the base of the tank. I have external Pelican pumps (I know they aren't great), and am looking to totally revamp the tank.

My question is this... If I go with an wet/dry filter how much spray if any is there? This key as I'm going to install it in very close proximity to a very expensive laminate floor.

My goal is maximal biological filtration with the lowest risk of water damage.

Any tips are greatly appreciated.

Hi...I got a testing kit...drove 45 miles to get one and the one they had didnt test for nitrate..but I have the strip (i know, but better than nothin)It does test ammonia and nitrite though. Sooo My tank(45H) is still just live sand, marco rock 50lb, and live fiji10lb, and no living creature but my darn aiptasia. (a whole nother topic) I tested the ammonia and the nitrite this morning and got
Ammonia 3.0
Nitrite 0.3
Nitrate 20

The ammonia is really between the 1.5 and 3.0 but closer to the 3.0
I raised the temp to 80 and have not changed the salinity which reads at 1.024
Did not put the shrimp in until I could really read the ammonia, my strip kit didnt have it.
Now what...I have not done a water change and need to know if you have any suggestions or advice where to go, now that I have more exact testing. Been running 12 days with sand, 10 days with Marco rock and 5 days with live rock added. Thanks so much..Stacy

Hi all,

I have a cleaning crew (bought from Live Aquaria) and it included 2 Atlantic Sea Cucumbers. I have them in the tank but then after some reading discovered that they can be ticking time bombs that can kill your tank. I did some reading and there are no guarantees that the ones I have will be non toxic. So I removed them and put them in my QT tank. But what do I do with them? and if they can wipe out your tank why would they be included with a reef package cleaning crew to begin with!

Is anyone keeping a sea cucumber?

Many thanks!

I have been working on getting everything ready to set up a 90 gallon reef tank but don't have have all my stuff yet. I have a few people holding frags for me now and I am able to get some good deals on some corals now. I ran across a really good deal on some used stuff and couldn't pass it up. So, I was able to set up my own frag tank. I am going to hold off on my display tank and get some of my corals in my frag tank so I can get some growth on them. This way I will be able to get the things that I want for my display and will not feel the need to try to rush anything.

Tank: 65 gallon 36 X 18 X 24 with overflow
Sump: 100 gallon stock tank
Return pump: Little Giant 1325gph model
Skimmer: Old Berlin Turbo XL model
Lighting: 250watt IceCap MH with 10000K ReefLux bulb
Powerhead: MaxiJet1200 with SureFlow mod
Heaters: 2 200watt
LiveRock: 35 pounds of well cured Fiji

And I won a ATO at our Frag Swap last weekend.

It might not be pretty but I think it will work.

Water Parameter after it has been running for a few day:

PH: 8.2
Ammonia: 0 Nitrite: 0 Nitrate: 0 Phosphate: 0
Calcium: 500 Phosphate: 0 KH: 12 Mag: 1440
These numbers are just like what Reef Crystals shows that it should have.
