20gal Long Mafia

This 20g is the fallout tank from a SA 40g I have set up at my brothers house.
Back in April I purchased 6 Apisto huascar at the Seattle auction. They've all been coexisting in the 40g until yesterday when I split them up, 3 in each tank. Ideally, the plan was to have a male and 2 females in each, but I could use some help sexing them. The 3 in the 20g seem to hate each other equally.
The 20 needs a schooling fish now... Recommendations?
I'll get pics of the 3 in the 40g this weekend.

I'd say something mid to top-level that would stay out of the huascars' way. Hatchetfish, maybe?

Hatchets get a little bigger than I was looking for. I'd like to go small as possible with more numbers, 8+ fish. I will be at the Wetspot fish store soon. Their fish stock list is extensive with a great selection.
I like the Emperor tetra, but I think they might be too big.

I like the Emperor tetra, but I think they might be too big.

They do get too big to have in a decent school in that tank, I think. But... ember or ruby tetras would look quite nice. My only question would be about compatibility with your apistos.

And do report back on your impressions of The Wet Spot. I've often considered mail-ordering from them.

Last September I put 18 Embers in my 40, and only had 2 jumpers, maybe 3. They are a hearty little tetra for sure. The apistos don't pay them much attention. The jumpers happened before the apistos were in the 40g.
I'd recommend the wetspots stock and variety. The staff is on point too. I haven't done their shipping before.

I've never worked with apistos, so I'm not as familiar with their behavior and water parameters but what about dwarf chain loaches or forktail blue eye rainbowfish?

Two weeks ago, I had to move the tank from Seattle to Portland. What an exciting drive that was with 2 5gal in the trunk, and a 20L on the back seat of my volvo haha! I left the 3 apistos, bn pleco, and filter media in the tank with about a 1/3 of the remaining tank water. The fish survived the trip and are now reestablished with some new tankmates.
The CPD'S were under quarantine and currently not for sale at the Wet spot. I also checked out the Boraras brigittae... Very cool, but they looked like they would be tasty snacks. Knowing what I know now, they could work as adults, just too small currently.
I picked up 6x Hemigrammus rodwayi(Gold tetra), and 12x Boraras maculatus(dwarf spotted rasbora), both wild. Both fish look really good with their added movement in the mid and top water. The gold tetra has an interesting taxonomy to check out. I was a bit nervous for the rasboras when they were initially poured into the tank. The male apisto was quite pissy and chased them for a while. The next day, surprisingly, all the fish survived! Aggression has subsided, and only one gold tetra lost the bottom of his caudal fin.
3 apistogramma were in this tank a week ago, but only 2 remain...they offed the 3rd. They've definitely paired up, and the courtship has begun. The male's colors are starting to pop and I'm hoping he gets a tall dorsal too.

Right now I am in love with these guys. I have liked them since I got them but the other night they made it into my top enjoyed fish!

Microdevario Kubotai aka Micro Green Rasbora or Green (or Yellow) Kubotai.

I only have 7-8 and will get more soon. They are always active and flashing their color around, right out in the middle of everything and petite, like the upper 1/4 mostly, to -1/3 of the tank. Never seen them in the bottom half of the tank! Awesome, easy fish!!! Check them out!

Really like your boraras! Great little fish definitely one of my favs!

55 gallon elephant nose tank.
30 gallon boraras , red longfin bristlenose, bamboo shrimp, crs,rcs and different snails.
7 gallon halfmoon betta and red ramshorn.

Right now they are in the 12G Edge with 4 baby Mexican Swordtails which are just their size now about to be getting bigger!

Considering putting them into the 72G with all the Neons (now ~ 60) and other fish. I just removed 2 giant Angelfish and they were the reason I hadn't considered that before. I feel like the Green Kubotai will still be hanging around the upper 1/3 whereas the Neons wil be mid to low.

The Swords will for sure be moving into the 72G when they are just another 1/4" so they don't become fish food.

I had planned for the Chili Rasbora to be their tank mates.

These guys are highly active, and will eat anything moving around that can fit in their mouth, so I am sure they might consume baby shrimp if they knew they were there. They were in my 12G shrimp tank for about with some very tiny baby WCMM and they chased them around trying to eat them so they went to the other tank and the WCMM stayed with the Chilis.
