African cichlid setup help

Setting up an African cichlid tank which I have a little bit of gravel on it but I am going to take some out and buy African cichlid sand.
My question is it ok to Leave some gravel and just put the sand on top or should I go all sand?
I know it's normally not bad to do but I am knew with Africans and I want it
Right.
The gravel I had was from a
Ten gallon startup and I used the 10 gallon as a startup water in my bowfront.

Also what would be the best type of filter for a 55 gallon?

Normally you'll want to put egg crate lighting panels under the sand to protect the bottom glass. So youll need to take out all the rocks and decor to get that in.
