Algae cleaner, sand and glass.

I learned a long time ago that this is a bad combination. I currently move the sand away from the glass before cleaning at the sand level then move it back. Is there a better way that anyone has come up with to do this without sand getting on the scrubber and scratching the glass.

I use razor blade for the close to the sand work or just be really careful.
