A very large waterchange. I wouldn't use chemicals. Why is your ammonia so high? Is the tank cycled? How long has it been set up?

Well it's been set up for about 2 months now, however when I set it up and got my fish I wasn't aware of the fishless cycle so I am not sure if it is cycled or not. I did a (pwc) 50% yesterday and it still came out at 4 ppm. Knowing my errors about the fishless cycle I now have a 55 gal that I am currently cycling.

Ok I checked the ammonia level this morning again and it was about 8.0ppm then I did a ( pwc) about 50%-75% and checked again it was about 2-3 (ppm) so it's going in the right direction I am going to go get a bottle of prime someone had said that would help. I am also wondering what causes ammonia levels to get high like that?
