It would probably depend on what they were in with pal, I had a 3" male along with the same size blue acara, two 5" severums a 6" Oscar and a 5"Vieja argentea in a 100 gallon tank with no problems as I had them all pretty much together from being small, then one day the blue acara did nothing but chase and bully the female convict until the inevitable death, the other tank mates give my acara a wide berth, she is the daddy! everyones experience with cichlids is different so can be trial and error but nothing wrong with plenty of reseach before hand so you put them with fish of the same aggression

Just rehomed my female con a few weeks ago after noticing breeding behavior between it and my male jack Dempsey. I wasn't down for that!
