Hello, I recently got a bolivian Ram but I don't know the gender and I want to get a mate. How can you tell gender?

post a pic and well tell ya.......

Males are much more colorful then the females, My females have a yellow/orange belly and less color in the fins and my males have red/orange stomachs with tons of color throughout.

Thanks a lot. In that case I have a female because it looks like an anchovi! lol
She had a little orange at the petstore but it's gone now. Is this due to stress?

Yes, is she eating?

got a pic of the tank, might not be to her liking and those of us who have had them for years can give some insight.

She should have some color and not just greyish silver. What else is in the tank with her? Males wash out too, the males fins are larger then the females and the males tails have a very distinct set of trailers that are usually red outlined on the tips(all their fins but their gill fins.(I call em arms)
This is a young male and an adult male

That's a beautifull looking Ram! Mine only has some small blue dots in the fins. The fins seem to be large proportionally to the body, so it might be a washed out male I guess. I'll try to post a picture tonight or tomorrow. I am sure you can tell what it is. BTW, I could only see one pic out of the two.
And WHAT DO YOU FEED HIM? Is that part of the secret?
Thanks.

my fish ONLY get ken's flakes and hikari bloodworms. thats it. But I have mine living in 6.0ph at 82 degrees and they get clean water twice a week@35g a PWC.

Here is a pic of my larger male.

You can see the trailers on the back fin that's being talked about.

I feed mine the following foods
Hikari Cichlid Gold pellets, Tetra Prima granules, pleco multi wafers, tropical flake, freeze dried Daphnia and some frozen cichlid mix.

Here is a pic of my female.

Thanks WD!
I currently feed my fish flakes, frozen bloodwoms and frozen brine shrimp.
My tank has 2 angels, 5 black skirt tetras, 3 buenos aires tetras, 2 rainbow (1 albino + 1 redtail) 2 platies and 2 goldbarbs. 3 snails and plants.
My PH is at 7.8 and I am trying to lower it to at least 7.0.
I just added Fluval Peat granules last night. (I just added 2 tbsp because I can't find any suggestions and the box has no instructions or recomendations) Are you familiar with peat? if so How much should I use on an 80G tank with a 20G sump.

Your fish are beautiful

Well, based on those pictures and your comments, It looks like I got a female.
BTW- yes, she is eating even she is new to the tank. 2 days
Thanks a lot everybody.

Is that to me?

It's Pygmy Chain Sword.

Yes it was Jon, I am still playing with this site. For some reason two messesges came out.
I asked because I recently got something that looks just like it at Petsmart but it was labeled as mondo grass. When reserching I found out that this grass does not well under water.
Yours looks great.
When I went back to Petsmart, I was told that all their plants are fully aquatic. Not the case at Petco I hear.

Mine is definitely aquatic. I have a specialist aquatic plant retailer near me.

It cost me £250, which I think is around $350 to plant up my tank.

Really? I am in the wrong business!
I'll be posting a pic of my ram in a couple of hours. Maybe you call tell me for sure what it is. Now I have doubts since I noticed a fine red outline on its fin.

Here are two pics of my Ram

Based on your comments it looks like it's a female, but I'll let you be the judge

Give me some info about the ram?

How old?
Tank temp?
Food?

Generally Rams will colour more as they age. My male is at least 6months old. I've had him since March.

So the chances are that over time he will colour more but it will also depend upon the colourings of parents.

Thanks Jon,
Sorry I took so long to reply, I am traveling in Brazil (for work not vacations)
I really have no idea how old he is or she. Let's say he is about 1 3/4 to 2 inches long, and I had him for a week an a half.
Water temp is 80F.

I will be back home on Aug 11 and I want to get a second ram. So by then I must know for sure if my ram is a male or female. I will post another picture when I get home.

Thanks
