I remove the females if they are holding and put them in their own tank. Once the eggs and then wrigglers become free swimming I remove her. There will be a time when the fry are out on their own most of the time and then I pull her. Fry can be removed from her by gently holding her and gently opening her mouth with a fingernail. She will spit them out.
If you don't have another tank then she should protect the fry until she gets tired of it. Then other fish in the tank may have a snack.
