Bunblebee cichlid help!!

With dwarf cichlids they are comunity friendly so the agression levels are on a completely lower spectrum. And barbs will do fine as dithers
 
Depends on the barb...and the dwarf cichlid for that matter, the easiest to find and keep being apistogramma cacatuoides, but certain barbs can be aggressive or nippy, such as tiger barbs. I prefer to stay in the biotopes anyway and most tetras work great with apistos

And a pair would be fine given that there are several places to hide, two males would even work, they're more colorful
 
I have plenty of places to hide, I have a few pieces of PVC for the cichlids.

Could catfish work? (the 3 inch and smaller ones)

I don't really want more cichlids... They are too cichlidish.

What's the biggest fish I could fit in a 20 gallon for the rest of its life?

you really cant do much as far as size. and most dwarf cichlids are community friendly
