Buying Cichlids

I have a 55 gal aquarium with 2 yellow labs, a red zebra and a blue acei. I'm adding more but my question is if I have to buy groups of the same type of mbuna cichlids. In other words can I buy a single johanni and demasoni or do I need groups of two or three of these.

They are best kept in groups of 1 male 3 females but if you want all males you can do individuals..you just don't want a 1 to 1 ratio because the single female will usually get harassed to death
