Can a male and female cichlid live together alone?

I have a large tank around 35 gallons and I have one demasoni male cichlid living alone. I was wondering if a pair of male and female would be able to live together? Iím ok with them breeding as well. Would they fight? Or would they stay as a couple? Iím not sure.
