cichlid salt

How much? Is it needed? FW Salt, SW salt or salt specifically for cichlids?

It's not needed. I read your recent post where you talked about using aragonite to buffer up the pH of your water, and that should be fine in and of itself. Plus, your cichlids are probably so far removed from wild specimens that they are more adaptable than WC fish to conditions that WCs would require.

Generally, for tank-bred African cichlids, they're not necessary, but they are desirable.

However, if you're planning on stocking some wild-caught specimens, then trying to duplicate the waters of any of the Rift lakes should be considered a must. If price isn't an issue, I think a number of companies (Seachem comes to mind) sells salt mixes specific for African cichlids. Since I don't get those here in the Philippines, I make do with a "poor man's recipe". It's basically rock salt, baking soda and epsom salts.

You don't need it on regular basis for cichlids. I typically use it (in a hospital or qaurantine tank) only for reducing a fishes stress or as a laxative.
