Cichlids for beginners?

I have a 20g tank. With a ph of 8.4-8.6, people tell me my water is suitable for some cichlids.
What cichlids are suitable for beginners with such a tank size and such a ph?

with a 20g tank, very very few. There are some small shell-dwellers that may fit, but even those I would be hesitant to recommend for that small of a tank.

Is it a 20H or a 20L? You could do rams(bolvian, german blue)

shellies are good in a 20, however imo they need a 20L more than H. with a 20H u may want to look at pseudocrenilabrus and apisto varieties, as they like to swim all over. also rams are good for this. what about dwarf angels? x

Several shellies would be fine. Multis are a good choice, even for a 10g.
