is there anything i can put in with a convict that it wont rip too pieces?

Rocks?

What size tank is this guy in?

Sometimes Cichlids will behave better as a social group, if you can find more of the same species.

i had a female that he killed
hes in a 5.5 gallon tank, i know its way too small i didnt research and i listed to the lfs
im waiting for either him to die or me to find a bigger tank
than im gonna get something small and peacful
like tetras

that's worth repeating

You should build your convict a custom tank- a HUGE one! =D

Then you can consider tankmates.

Fo now you have no options unfortunately.

If anything you can plant the tank slowly for convicts are amazon fish and that will prolly help the felonfish thrive a bit more, being that there's something going on other than tight parameters. :)

im looking at a 30 gallon tank setup with my next check
sound okay?

30 gallons is still on the small side for convicts. Some people have been able to keep a pair of convicts in a 30, but I do not believe there was any other fish in the tank with them (except lots of fry). If living conditions are right, convicts can live for 5-8+ years. If you would rather have something more peaceful, now is the time to give him away and start fresh.
