Convict odd habit

So I was just watching my fish eat and my convict started spewing something out of his gills. He puffed up real big and then what looked like chewed food came out. Any ideas?

What are you feeding and what size?

He is about 3pm be gets both omega one flakes and medium size pellets that are mixed with sinking and floating by top fin. It's what he ate when I took him in. It was the flakes he ate today which he loves

I would skip the flakes and feed smaller pellets. Sounds like a messy eater, it's not uncommon for uneaten food to be expelled out of the gills. Proper sized pellets allowing the fish to swallow them whole will reduce this.

Thanks. He is a brute! I think his problem might be part him chasing everyone while he eats. I will get smaller pellets to help
