The courtesy nip is an African cichlid behavior that I have dubbed to describe an observation typically viewed at night.
One fish begins to drift or enter the space of another fish unknowingly.
The invaded fish gives a little nip to let the other fish know, "hey, I'm here."

Anyone else seen this?

Yes, I dim my tank way down at night so i can barely see their outlines and I have witnessed this behavior before.

I wish mine was more courteous! I have one that will just chase them off, but as soon as chased out of area, she's happy again and stupid going after the other one.
