filter for 20 gal.
Hi. I will be setting up a 20 [acronym:41648b7faf="Gallon"]gal[/acronym:41648b7faf] dwarf cichlid tank in the new year. However, because I am in a dorm at university, I really need the filter to be quite so I dont make my roomates hate me. What would be the best filter then. Money is no option lets say

I would go with an aquaclear [acronym:784411ca5e="Hang On Back"]HOB[/acronym:784411ca5e] filter. Reliable and quiet as long as you keep the water line up. I'm not familiar with their new naming of their filters but I would go with one that has at least 120gph flow.

so a [acronym:31400e5d5c="Hang On Back"]hob[/acronym:31400e5d5c] would be quiter then a canister or internal filter? If so then I will do a [acronym:31400e5d5c="Hang On Back"]hob[/acronym:31400e5d5c].

I would do a AquaClear [acronym:fd9abf1eda="Hang On Back"]HOB[/acronym:fd9abf1eda] filter for it. The canister I think would be a little overkill for the 20 [acronym:fd9abf1eda="Gallon"]gal[/acronym:fd9abf1eda] [acronym:fd9abf1eda="In my opinion"]IMO[/acronym:fd9abf1eda].

Internal filters are not as efficient for biological filtration. Cannisters may be overkill and not cost effective. My [acronym:4add22dafb="Hang On Back"]HOB[/acronym:4add22dafb] are quiet.

AQUACLEAR [acronym:8f8df248ab="Hang On Back"]HOB[/acronym:8f8df248ab]. Aquaclear is the best and quietest.

The biggest trick to keeping any [acronym:e337549581="Hang On Back"]HOB[/acronym:e337549581] quiet, is keeping the water level high enough to meet the return ramp. The more it waterfalls the louder it gets.
I'd also recommend the Aquaclears. You'll want either 2 of the smallest [acronym:e337549581="Activated Carbon"]AC[/acronym:e337549581] model, or 1 of the next size up. The smallest were called Mini, and are now [acronym:e337549581="Activated Carbon"]AC[/acronym:e337549581] 20. the next one up was 150, and is now the [acronym:e337549581="Activated Carbon"]AC[/acronym:e337549581] 30. (I happen to have two 20gal's, with both the above [acronym:e337549581="Activated Carbon"]AC[/acronym:e337549581] configurations. Its cheaper to get the one [acronym:e337549581="Activated Carbon"]AC[/acronym:e337549581] 30)

Pilgrim which college in SC are you attending?
I've already been accepted to University of South Carolina in the College of Engineering and I haven't heard back yet from Clemson or CofC and I didn't feel like applying to the Citadel cause I know basically anyone can be accepted (a guy at my school has about a 2.5 gpa and below a 1050 combined SAT and was accepted and there where a couple others like that). I'd also go with the aquaclear hang on back filter. |
