Hi guys,

I have a 5" GT and would like to get a mate for it as he or she is lonely in it's new 90gal home.

So my question is, is it male or female? You be the judge.

Cheers,
ozmo

Im gonna go with male. He/shes BEAUTIFUL how big.

Yeah he/she is a beauty although there is a little fin damage at the moment, which is repairing nicely, from stress caused by one of her former tankmates (a similar sized Flowerhorn).

I initially overestimated it's size. It's most likely just over 5" in length.

I have had several people comment both male and female on another forum so I really am not certain either way.

Anyone else have an opinion on the sex of this fish?

Looks to be male judging by fin shape and small hump developing on the forehead almost 99.9% sure without seeing it up close

Thanks to everyone for your input and comments.

I'm going with the male verdict and agree, he is a beautiful specimen. He is also a bit of a character already rushing the tank when I'm near but hides from strangers.

Now I just need to find him an equally attractive female companion.

Cheers,
ozmo

Thanks for sharing. I guess I just had never seen one that large and therefore had not seen the color development. Awesome fish.

Here's a few more pics of this GT in his original tank. His colors really shine when he has tank mates.

Ozmo - Any aggression problems with your GT? I had one a few months back and had to rehome him because we was too dominate with the other cichlids. I don't know if mine was male or female.

I had to do the same with mine, the GT was downright nasty! But honestly he is an awesome fish. Ozmo that GT of urs is beautiful!

This particular GT is not aggressive in slightest (touch wood). He is very motivated by food and therefore uproots several plants but never once bothered his former tank mates.

I had to move him into his own tank because he was being harassed by a smaller male Flowerhorn (very beautiful also).

It will be interesting to see how this GT reacts to another GT (hopefully of the opposite sex).

Ahhh, have a flowerhorn too, got him when he was tiny, now I'm convinced my LFS mislabeled the bunch. It's some crazy hybrid mix. Gonna post pics soon cuz I'm really curious about what mix he is. I think that's awesome ur GT is nice, I loved mine he was awesome with me, but hated his tankmates :( but also a real picky eater... Do u have that issue with urs? Mine also used to come to my hand

Yeah I got my FH when he was a colorless little fry now he is a big fat chunker (see pics below). He is the most interactive fish I've ever had. He actually swims up to my hand for a massage and food of course. When I vac the gravel he is always right beside my hand just like a dog.

My GT isn't fussy at all. He used to even steal food from the Pleco when he could.

Here's my FH...

[moderator edit]

I was pretty much set on the idea that this GT was male but now I'm more confused than ever.

I have just been out looking for a suitable mate (a female) for "him" and after looking at similar sized males and females all day I am starting to think that "he" is actually the best looking female GT I've ever seen.

Anyone??

Looks a bit female to me only due to the lack of filaments on the dorsal/anal at this size. IIRC, all terrors have a bit of a hump, males just have it get larger.

If you get a second terror I'd make a divider out of egg crate before you introduce the new one and give them a few days (a week?) to get used to each other before pulling it. Of course, if you have lots of fish in the tank then that's more of an issue. Just be prepared to separate them if things go awry. Really nasty terrors can kill another in an hour.

Wow!! So pretty too!! My FH ( and I use the term loosely) doesn't look close to that! I think zip (FH) is an awesome fish too. He loves spying on me. But if ur still trying to determine if ur GT is a boy or girl, u can look on the underside of he or she and see if that if there is a V shape it's a boy and a U shape is a girl. That's really the only advice I could give. Don't know if Its 100% effective, but that's how I started sexing my fish. Hope that helps :) here are pics of my "FH" and you'll see what I mean about being not a true flowerhorn
