one fish of those species typically commonly available. If you are getting one of the dwarf species, then perhaps more depending on species. The commonly available mbuna species typically require a 4' or bigger tank.

If you want Mbuna, Cichlid Forum shows 8 fish 4 inches and under. I would go with two species that look different. Rusty Cichlid Iodotropheus Sperengae and Labidochromis Chisumlae. You could also look at some of the Cynotalapia species.
