Is my nyererei a male?

Since putting the nyererei in the larger tank with my med to large peacocks and haps it stopped showing the the black stripes, it never gets bullied but def is not in charge

Hiya! How big is it? From the looks of the photo, it looks as if its big enough that if it were male it would be showing alot more color than the barring. Some of my females have barring, or display them wheb aggravated, holding or spawning. Can you see any red or yellow on its sides or behind the eyes? Is there another male Nyererei (or similar coloring, like crimson tides or thick skins?) in the tank with it? Usually the presence of a dominant male of the same species will mute colors big time. Imo the color looks female with the exception of that dorsal & the black ventral fins.... That kinda confuses me. The body shape looks right for a male tho...I have read about false coloring too. I say get it out & vent it. Pretty much the only way to know for sure at this point.

If you do vent it & he is in fact male I would toss in a harem for him, would probably help him color up tremendously.

Lol it's all good wish I could help more! Do you have access to some females? I'm curious if the introduction of them would help him color up, if indeed it is male =)

Well it is around 2 inches and when I had two of them the whole bottom of it was completely black, unfortunately it jumped out of the tank and died, but would this fish make him loose color it it chase's everybody

Ughhhh... Just wrote a long post and tried to edit to add a pic and lost everything I wrote 3 females are good, 4 is better. The pic makes it look bigger than 2 inches! It might just need some time. I have 2 in ones that haven't colored up too much still.
