I have 2 in my Mbuna tank... and have had them almost a year... and they havent grown... maybe about a half inch in lenght. They are healthy, no one picks on them, just small.

I read something when I kept discus, that the dominate fish will excrete hormones, that can stunt the growth of the others. Now, I don't know if this is absolute fact, or just pertaining to discus or completely made up, just something that seems possible in my tank.

I LOVE my little jewels... they are just.. well.. little. =)

I wouldn't suggest keeping new world cichlids with africans. Their requirements are just too different.

Brian-thats why i didn't get them... im trying to keep my tank only MBUNA cichlids and so far im doing pretty good. (well if you don't count the plecos, clown loaches, and rainbow shark but they were there first.. lol)
What sort of requirements do these jewel cichlids need? Just out of curiousity.

I can't answer your signature question Ashley. The site has had a whole new upgrade and it might take a while for everything to settle in.

Regarding the jewels. They're a beautiful fish. They can get very nasty however and should have lots hiding nooks as one will try and dominate another. If your tastes run towards new world cichlids this a terrific fish to keep.

Aye.. the different water requirements is most likely the cause of the stunted growth...

Jewel cichlids are actually African cichlids. Just not rift lake cichlids. They are from West African rivers and streams, and like neutral-ish pH and hardness. Very beautiful fish that stays at a managable size, that will attempt to kill everything it can find when spawning. Think of them as Africa's answer to the Convict cichlid.
