Yes, they can breathe air. The reason for the filter in a Betta tank is not to provide oxygen but to provide a healthy stable home for them (cycling the tank). They prefer still but not stagnant water.

I certainly hope you are changing out the water every few days in your cube to prevent ammonia build up.

I think I'm done scaping for now and just gonna enjoy it. I can't believe the comments I get when people come over. Makes me feel good! :)
