Lava rock questions

[The boring name]

Hey guys well in my living room munba show tank we have white gravel witch I despise. But my parents wanted. I finally talked them over and I got a 50 lb bag of small red lava rock pieces from lowes. It's really dirty so if I just was it out really good in the oversized sink and give it a couple of runs through till it is running clear would it be ok? Any concerns

I would say return the lava rock and switch to sand, because the lava rock is pretty coarse and cichlids love to "gurgle" sand which helps their digestion. On the other hand however, with lava rock, you want to be careful and look out for any injuries the cichlids may have inflicted upon themselves accidentally.
