Hi everybody!

I have a 55 gallon tank with some African cichlids in it. The other day one of my lights broke, so now only half of the tank is illuminated leaving the opposite side dark. Is this a healthy setup for cichlids? How much lighting do cichlids need per day?

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Lights are really o my for your benefit. They don't need light. Some people only turn the lights on when they want to enjoy watching them or having company over and want to show there tank and fish off.

But light is not a necessity. Before I got a fixture I finally liked I didn't have lights. Only natural light and the house lights.
