Mixing Cichlids and Semi-aggressive.

Would it be all right to mix Cichlids and Semi-aggressive fish together? I would like to have Firemouths, Angelfish, Bala Shark, and Pleco together.

How large a tank? How many of each fish? That combo could work depending on tank size.

My brother has Africans (very aggressive) with a pleco and bala sharks. It's not ideal to mix, but can work. I realize you're talking about S.A. Cichlids, but it could work if you have a large enough tank.

That should be big enough for angels and firemouths, maybe 2 of each, could even do 3 or 4 angels. Bala sharks like to be kept in shoals and can get to be a foot long. They would be all right as juveniles but they will out grow the tank eventually.

I have never tried that, so I can't say for sure, but I don't think that angels would survive in a tank with firemouths. My firemouth can be aggressive with my severum, which is a much bigger fish than the FM, so I would think that a FM would be bad news for angels. Angels are kind of delicate and swim slowly, also. I think you would be ok with the FMs, bala, and pleco, or the angels, bala, and pleco. If you go with the FMs, maybe you could choose another kind of semi-aggressive cichlid. HTH

Thanks Severum I have never had Firemouths all the books I have say they are rather gentle tempered. Thanks for correcting me on that one.

Hmmm... I think liveaquaria.com describes them as "semi-aggressive", and that pretty accurately describes mine. Most of the time he seems mild-mannered, but he does flare at my severum and convict. He is wild-caught, so I wonder if that would make any difference. Anyway, I think the real trouble would come along if the FMs were a pair.

Oh, I just read where you posted that the balas grow to a foot long! I didn't know that, so I guess they would best be left out unless there are plans to rehome or upgrade the tank.
