What is the reference for that quote? A quote is meaningless without the referenced work being listed.

Here is the reference. Its an exclusive planted aquarium club.

There are a number of sources for this though since its fairly well known in the planted tank communities. How about a thread with a response from our resident Planted Aquarium Expert Rex.

Please don't get me wrong here. I'm not suggesting that you don't need beneficial bacteria. All I said was that the plants like to consume it too and they tend to be better at it than the bacteria. The actual effect really depends on how heavily planted your tanks are though and of what type you got. I'm not talking about just a few ferns... I'm talking about heavy planting. But in general you will see a softer cycle with a heavily planted aquarium as opposed to a bare aquarium. Oh... and yes plants will take only small amounts in but that is what we are talking about right? We test ammonia in ppm.

A planted tank is good but beware if you take your plants out in one fell swoop! The sudden change in the tank will cause algae bloom and upset the genera ammonia-nitrite-nitrate cycle of the tank for awhile.
I think my fish were happier with live plants vice the fake ones....

actually it was my daughter's tank. She has a pair of gourami and the male kept uprooting and chowing down on everything, made for a very messy tank. When we pulled it out the next day the tank was green and stayed that way for a few weeks...
