Sorry. Missed these responses. Celebes halfbeaks are another matter. They're from Celebes, an island of Indonesia, now known as Sulawesi. My halfbeaks are found from Thailand to Indonesia (so there could potentially be some overlap in habitat). Celebes halfbeaks do tend to have a shorter snout from what I've seen online in the past.

Mine are Dermogenys pusilla: http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.cfm?genusname=Dermogenys&speciesname=pusilla

Celebes Halfbeaks (Nomorohampus liemi): http://www.greenparktropical.com/Fish/images/misc/Celebes Halfbeak.jpg or http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.cfm?ID=24752&genusname=Nomorhamphus&speciesname=liemi

Update as of 7_19_04

The halfbeaks are all doing well. They're a little larger and their fins are much brighter due, I think, to the New Life Spectrum I've been feeding them.

Excellent photos! I am so happy they are doing great! I've kinda adopted them as my own.. I hope you don't mind... :O)

LOL. Sure, and if I ever can't keep 'em because I'm moving or something, I'll send them overnight to you in Canada.

BTW, check out a pretty cool feature of them. They often use their pectoral fins to push themselves downwards, and when they do, it looks a little bit like they're flying. See the second of the new pictures to see what I'm talking about.

And that picture makes it look like the little guy's flying through space, as it's so black, and the bubbles at the surface look like stars.

I was almost making myself dizzy looking at those pictures!!! Space Halfbeaks!!!

LOL. I know.

I think it's really cool to see that these fish have colored up so much in the last few months. The fins have gone from a pale red to 4 diff colors! White, Black, Red, Yellow. They totally exceeded my expectations!

Same old same old. Some of them have really grown! They've got the tank to themselves now, and I'm feeding them a million different things. They'll eat anything, including my fingers. It gets a little scary, actually, as they all bite ferociously at my finger at the same time. Doesn't hurt, but it's quite a shock.

Wish I was in New York so I could check them out and let them chew on my finger! Then we could go over an play with BrianNY's discus and pleco's.....

what size do they grow to?

wow, those sound awesome. my lfs just orders the same old stuff every week, wish we could get some cool new stuff... of course that'd mean I'd need more tanks 8O

I saw some halfbeaks here locally a few weeks ago but didn't have a place to put them. We rearranged some fish and went back to look for something interesting the following weekend and they were all gone.

They must have gone QUICK.

how are they doing now, madasafish?

i'm from sydney, and i've been dying to get some of these halfbeaks, but i cant seem to find them anywhere. ive been to like 20 specialised and well recognised fish shops and none of them stock them. i dont think they are rare, as i've seen them before i got interested in them. they just dont get around much.

may i ask you pls post some pictures up? i would really love to see them now.

thanks,
wes
