New to Cichlids

Hi, suggestions welcomed. I have a 46 gallon bow front tank. Currently it has the pivot fish we used to cycle the tank. Every time we have done the API test, our ph is consistently 8.2. Our tap water has 8.0 ph and we know we have hard water. (All our other numbers are low.). From what I have read, our water seems to be great for cichlids. Does anyone have suggestions of what type we should look into? Out substrate is gravel and currently we have no plants, but I would like to add some live plants also.

Thanks

African cichlids need PH of 8. But people say you need at least a 55 to house them. You could get some mbuna cichlids. They tend to stay smaller than peacocks and haps. They max at 5 or 6 inches.

I would look into some smaller SA/CA cichlids like firemouths, convicts, blue acaras, rainbow cichlids. I would suggest a stocking of

1- Firemouth
1- Convict
3- Pictus Cats
1- BN Pleco

Or

4- Rainbow Cichlids
1- BN Pleco

Something along those lines.

This is bad advice. South Americans need soft low ph water... Hard water with a ph of 8 is way way to high for them.

Id agree with the smaller mbuna recommendations and your water is perfect for them, indeed.

On every website firemouths and rainbow cichlids live from soft to hard water and from low to high ph.

Also Convict really they live in hard water with high ph. So idk how is this bad advice I think your wrong just saying since I have kept SA/CA Americans in any hard or soft water with success and not one dieing.

I believe you.. But recommending SAs for water thats perfect for africans and the opposite for SAs is alittle silly. Its nothing personal and just my opinion.

Thanks, I will go look into all of these and see which my lfs has. Hopefully the independent store has them and I don't have to deal with Petco or Petsmart.
