I know you are supposed to put more cichlids in than normal to spread aggression. What is the ideal number of fish

You cant judge "per gallon"". Its based on dimensions of the tank. If it has a small footprint but is tall, it cant hold as many. But if it is short and squat, it can hold more, even if its the same amount of gallons.
