Do you consider the pike cichlid to be hard to care for? what is the smallest and hardiest species? I like the look but I know very little so I don't want to get any yet.
Pm, 5x5 I think he knows more about them then anyone.
From what I have read and researched about them is they are no harder to care for then any other SA/CA cichlid. I know some have really nasty attitude as well. But cool fish non the less. Jeff Rapps has some called "cobra" pikes. They are amazing.
I actually just picked one up yesterday, belly crawler Pike cichlid. From what I've read on this species like to lay low most the time, they naturally live on the bottom of fast moving streams/rivers, hence their name belly crawler. but don't let it fool u. They are aggressive and have larger mouths then the norm. This one will grow up to about 6 inches.. Suggests you have a fan to mimic a stream environment. I have also read that they are very hearty fish and can withstand higher then normal ph's not suggested and I'm not guna try that out. They eat ur normal cichlid foods from pellets to live fish I don't suggest live fish however, and insects...
Yeah, I agree with Aski, message 5x5 if you're truly interested in pikes. I know crenicichla regani is a small, peaceful species, commonly called the "Peaceful Pike"
I know that some of them get huge, up to 2 feet. Ive never owned one but a buddy of mine has had one for 6 years, and its easy to care for he says. His is huge, he has it in a 300 gal, it is approaching 19".
