Play sand

I noticed with play sand if its to deep it grows a ton of anaerob's and the silicates supercharge algae growth. Looks great though.
 
Try keeping a check on having the light on so long, and/or try the Siesta period too, I never got the bad brown diatoms, I used construction sand, QUIKRETE®, was keeping the light on the lower end of use for the first two months.
 
I love the play sand. It's so cheap and soft. I usually put it in the tank completely dry and then SLOWLY ADD THE WATER, MAKING SURE I DIDN'T DISTURB THE SAND. I know I'll probably be hated on for doing that, but honestly, I haven't lost any fish since I switched over to play sand 6 months ago. It takes between half an hour and thirty six hours to settle completely, depending on how carefully I added the water.
