Perhaps this was in relation to the increase in C14 from nuclear testing in the 1960's (lol was just reading on this again)? I'd be interested in any links on research or articles as I confess I'm not quite seeing the basis for the concern either.

Could be. C-14 may be a product of radioactive U or Pu decay.
