I have a 50 gallon tank with a large common pleco and 1 large severum. The severum had a tank mate for many years (blood red parrot) that recently died. He's been alone in the tank for about 3 months and I'm wondering if I should get him a buddy or not. It doesn't seem right keeping him in there with just the pleco. He's doing well otherwise. I've had him for well over 6 years and he's about 6-7 inches.

Suggestions?

Oh, and I don't have my freshwater info on my bio so here it is:

50 gallon tank
2 marineland 350 canister filters (along with the 8 biowheels)
undergravel filters with 2 power heads
pwc every 3 weeks and run the diatom filter every 2-3 weeks.

Your severum doesn't need a buddy to be happy. In fact, the reverse might be the case. Right now the tank is his/hers. Adding another fish may appear to a cichlid as territoreal infringement.

I agree with Brian.

If you really feel the need to add fish, look into a school of tetras, barbs, rasboras, etc. Just be sure they won't be small enough to fit in the sev's mouth.

Otherwise, I'd leave things as-is.
