Hi again. First off I could use help w posting pics right side up =) dont know what that is about. My fish are around 3 in., the ones I bought at the lfs have color already. I just got 6 more from local breeder who made his best guess that I was purchasing males. It's weird they don't have color when my others do. If you can tell from my pics, I'm questioning the venustus and the red empress, (black middle horizontal marking).
Thanks again!

I know the ones from lfs are hybrids.
Do you think it could be chemicals the lfs uses as to y they have color before these others?

Are you using a flash? Don't use flash make sure no other lights are on in room in other words we want the only light source being that of the Aquarium. Then make sure your camera is level turning to left will give you landscape and of course straight up will be portrait. Photo Studio is a good program if you are using Android and for Camera if you don't like what you have try getting app called Camera FV-5 lite Its free and takes good aquarium photos. As far as sexing Super red empress. I have many and have been raising fry. All I can tell you is not easy and usually have to wait until color comes in. I would get at least 4-5 fish you are sure then to get at least 1 male. They are prolific fish and at 2 inches begin to spawn(at least all mine have) Anyway if you are careful you should then have plenty to select from of your own within a couple 2-3 months. These are my experiences Others may disagree or have their own. From your photo I'd say you have either juvenile or female.

Thanks for ur input. I'm using a samsung tablet. I'm taking the pic right side up dont get thesideways thing. My empress is a tad over 3 in. I think. Should he be showing color by now? Is there a certain size or is it different for ea. fish? Any thoughts on the venustus, it's even larger

Please do not take offense. Just need info for my own. Did you rinse off your sand before adding to you tank?

No I didn't, but don't know if you're supposed to. I got it at lfs, have since learned you can use other cheaper sands, like pool sand, but I think that kind should be rinsed first, maybe all of 'em, idk Maybe someone else will chime in =)

All substrate should be rinsed before putting it into your tank. In fact all rocks and deco should, even if there from a pet store. All lot of dirt accumulates sitting on the shelf and also the movement of shipping will cause dust. It should clear up after a few water changes.

The venustus seems to be a female bit is hard to tell the males usually have some blue under there chin and there dorsal is slightly more pointed then the females but that is not always 100% you can vent tuem here's a pic to tell the difference between male and female.

thank you, I think she is female. I was just reading about juvie males having dark coloration on bottom fins by this size. Hers is bright yellow. plus the anal fin seems rounded....
