So, as I very recently discovered, Maine is the only state in the US with the bass-ackwards policy of having a "white list" of fish you're allowed to keep, and not a single shelldweller is on the list. This is patently absurd. Shelldwelling cichlids would never survive the water conditions and the harsh winter temperatures, let alone find suitable breeding habitat. I think that if they were applied to be put on the list, they would be quickly approved.
