I have a bristlenose pleco in sand and it cracks me up because he moves his tail when he eats and forms piles and valleys in the sand. I smooth my sand out every water change and by the end of the week it looks like sand dunes in there.

I have a mystery snail in another tank with sand and seems to be fine.

Just wanted to add my two cents in here. Depending on what you want the snails for and the variety there are out there, they have been a huge benefit for us. We have trap doors, diffusa, and trumpets. They are messy for sure if you have as many as we do but they are so pretty and neat to watch. Sifting the sand can be a pain but I wouldn't have any other substrate.

The ones I bought, do not reproduce and that is the most I know of them.
