sword developing on convicts tail fin

my friends convict is growing a small swordlike thing on his tailfin. its small but really neat. is there any reason why this wood be happening or is it just deformities.

i dont have a digital camera and the sword type thing is small but pronounced. ill look into getting a digital cam sson though ive been wanting one.
