i just started a cichlid tank about 2 weeks ago. i filled up the tank with tap water but it turns out my tap water has nitrite in it. my test are reading between .25ppm and 1ppm.

i have been using seachem prime but its not helping. i have 3 fish in the tank now and they seem to be fine. are these levels too high? should i get the fish out? im afraid to use my tapwater for topoff because of the nitrites.

any advice would be appreciated.

thanks,

When I had a nitrite spike in my tank I threw some plants in there. Hornwort is really cheap and good at killing nitrites. Bit you may not have cycled your tank probably.

Welcome to AA!

Your tank is definitely not cycled. And it's a bit unusual to have nitrItes right out of the tap.

What test kit are you using?
