What is an...

"Assorted Cichlid"?

are lfs just too lazy to separated and id there africans...

or as i suspect...

are they hybrids?

They are usually a tank full of "muts". You can find some full breed species but the lfs is just too lazy to post their names. Typically it is a tank full of Africans that may or may not get a long together. So just because they have them together does not mean that they SHOULD be together.

Either they couldn't be bothered writing the names, or they don't even know them..If it was something pure I guarantee they would at least have the name for them.

Quite often, they are distinct species. Commercial fish farms raise mbuna in outdoor ponds by the hundreds, and ship out young ones in large numbers. Also, many of the "assorted cichlids" are very aggressive species, like auratus, so lack of ID makes it easier to sell them to unsuspecting, uninformed customers. There are many, many posts on other forums from folks who but these fish, then turn up asking "Why did this fish kill that fish?"
