Does flake food really expire?

I have (2) 5.5 oz Prime Reef Flakes fish food. one has been open for over a year, and the other one is still sealed. The expiration date is 01/2013. i hate to throw them away. are they really expired?

I have used flakes 10+ years old there freeze dried they may get stale but about it

Ive just fed expired food with no issue, my cichlids are eating expired food and have been for years, still goin stong
