Thank you that was extremely helpful! The reason I was going to do 5 inches of sand was I wanted to get a yellowhead jawfish and I read that they need that much sand bed...

Build a huge hill in the center of your tank or one mound on the side. No need for the entire substrate to be a huge area for nutrients to build up.

I had a 3 inch sand bed my engineer goby moved all of it to the back of the rocks,
I guess he didn't like the deep sand , now I'm lucky if its a inch
