Those are some nice porous rocks :), congrats...

PS: on the last pic with the rock, I hope that's not aiptasia that's showing up

Yeah, I know I need more LR, DJ. I'm waiting for next payday since the first round was so expensive.

I put two raw shrimp in there last weekend and it's done the trick. The ammo has spiked to 2.0 on the 8th and today when I checked, the NO2 is up to 1.0 and the NO3 is up to 10. The ammo is still at 2.0 and pH has stayed dead on at 8.2 the whole time.

Do I need to leave the shrimp in there until it's fully cycled or can I remove them now that NH3 is up?

Bawel- I think that it may be aiptasia; it's moved itself about 3 times since last weekend. I am guessing by your concern that it's not a good thing?

Davegoz, if it's aiptasia, you might want to clean that out... aiptasia is NOT good...

about your corals.

your light will support more than just soft corals and mushrooms. check out my thread "29 gallon surprise". im curretly supporting 1 brain coral. 1 bubble coral and one hammer coral. which are all thriving (opening, closing and eating) im also doing a 8 gallon that i plan on putting some low flow low-med light LPS in. anyways good luck

Hi Davegoz...looking great!!! I use LR rubble both in my 75 SW Refugium and in my 35 Gallon Hex...Fosters & Smith makes/sells great little media bags to contain just such things...I use the Self-fastening one 6x10 with a velcro closure in my 280 Emperor on my 35. It works great and keeps particles from lodging in impellor...Just remember to keep the bag rinsed in your old salt-water from partial water changes to remove any gunk it has accumulated...

Good luck

Thanks Brad, I will check it out.

I am going to order the protein skimmer in a few weeks when the Nitrate cycle is finished. Is this going to eliminate my need for the floss filter cartridges? I bought a 2pk today at Petsmart and discovered they are $10.

i do not use those rip off cartridges... from what i understand there is no real need for activated carbon... so why not just pack your middle chamber with filter floss ... on top of the LR of course... untill the tank clears up then slowly ween it out of the system... right now i just have a think layer in mine.

Well, I checked water last night at my usual time and Ammo is down to 0.25, NO2 back to 0, and NO3 is at 10. SG is at 1.025.

My RO/DI unit is currently in transit with UPS, so I think I will be doing my big PWC by weeks end!

Is the next step getting a cleanup crew? I have Diatoms like crazy right now; I have been reading that they go away on their own. Do I need to wait until they go away before doing a water change and CUC? Or do I get more LR and let everything stabilize again before the CUC?

nope. as soon as shes cycled add your CUC... at least i did... my 8 gallon cycled before the diatoms hit... looks like the snails are actually eating them

-Brad

I bought more LR and ordered a CUC from Liveaquaria

Make sure to take water readings over the next few days to make sure that there is no problems with die off. Looking great, looks like quality rock.
