Yeah the black sand is way better than the white in my 75 gallon. Plus it doesn't look dirty even through cycling. I had diatoms but you couldn't really see them. Only on the rocks. And I love the real reef rock too because its darker.
 
The black sand is ground volcanic glass I think. Should work fine but doesn't have the buffering ability aragonite sand has. Use to use the black sand in freshwater all the time.
 
Mine was "live sand". (I still cycled with bacteria though) So I dunno if that makes a difference. Is it not good to use the black then? You have me worried now. :/
 
No, no. It will work biologically like any sand. Crushed coral has some tiny advantages as it can add some buffering to your alkalinity.
