T5s are more intense, for 48" they are 54 watts compared to the same length t8s which are 40 watts. Which is interesting because t8s are bigger. The number indicates the size of the bulb t5 is 5/8" t8 is 8/8 or 1" etc...

Any light is fine for fowlr and t8s are cheaper than t5s. The number of bulbs will depend on if you want corals and what type.

I have 6 T5's over my 55g. If there is any chance you eventually want corals then get a light for them. If i had to do over again i would have bought a really really nice LED fixture.
