A little baffled

Have a 90 gallon reef tank that isn't reef ready. So I have an eshopps pf-800 overflow rated at 800 gph. It feeds to an eshopps sump rated for 220 gallons. I have a rio+2100 return pump that with 4ft of head pumps 375 gph. So why does my return chamber keep running dry? BAFFLED?

Do you have enough water in the sump?the display tank will have a constant water level and it'll only change in your sump.

I try to keep the water level up but I have to add like a gallon of water per day. Auto top off is next purchase.

Then that's definitely your problem. My return area of my sump always run dry if I don't fill it everyday.

You could put a valve on the pump and cut the return flow back a bit when you don't have top off water
