No, it doesn't filter all of the water, just what you have running through it.
They mount under the sink and use a saddle valve on your incoming water pipe. I would put it out in the laundry area where the utility sink is, if you can. There will be a waste line and that will need to go to a drain. I have mine mounted on the wall above the utility sink and the waste line running in the sink.
the membrane is replaced about yearly, but the other stages are replaced more frequently, depending on how bad your water is.

I would like to do that myself, but the trouble with that, is you'll need large containers to hold water. Your faucets, your water heater, shower, toilets, must have a good supply of water at the ready.
The whole house R.O.D.I units are not cheap.

True but that way u know all ur water js safe. My parents had one when I was younger but something like that is going to be a lot. There are ways to make it cheaper like put ur own water holding container and what not but the prefab packages always look nice. I would consider it if I didn't have an apartment.
