You cannot bring them in the water that you collect them in because of plankton. Left stagnant this plankton will quickly die and start to polute the water. Millions of fish and inverst were lost long ago when they used to do that. The collectors learned their lesson and now use setteling ponds. See Anthony Calfo's book on coral propagation for more info.
