I have a 40 gallon tank that I will be using as a reef tank. I have a HOB Protein Skimmer, heater, maxijet 900, Filstar filter, dual compacts.......I will be adding sand and water soon but want to make sure I have not missed anything.

Ok will get another powerhead. 600, 900 1200? Have one 900. I am going to be using LR but want to cycle the water first, is this correct?

Go for a MJ 1200. I would dd the LR in the begining. It will actually help cycle the tank and cycle it faster. The "water"in the tank is not what cycles. Cycling is simply establishing the beneficial bacteria needed to keep a tank non-toxic for the livestock. This bacteria lives in the sand bed and on any LR in the tank, as well as in the media inside any filters.

On the LR... you don't want to take a chance on another cycle if you add rock with any die off later - after the initial cycle. I agree. Add it now.
