Base rock .. Local FL rock = old coral?

Hi folks,

Starting a new 90 reef, had a thought the other day as I drove past a construction site. I live in Fort Lauderdale, if you dig more than a foot here you hit solid 'coral' rock and construction sites have loads of huge hunks. I did a little research and found that several live rock resellers use rock mined from Homestead (1 hr south of here). The rock locally has the same basic structure and porosity, as it is after all coral that has fossilized. Assuming someone took these hunks, put them in a big trash can with some salt water and some live rock..wouldn't this work to make your own live rock? If so, I have tons of it all over the place free for the taking.

I'm selling my TV for a bigger tank, its more fun to watch.

It would work. BUT I would always be afraid that someone did an oil change right over the rocks that you are taking.
